WE JUST FINISHED FILMING 2001 MANIACS: BEVERLY HELLBILLYS!! WOO HOO!
Yes, it has happened! We just wrapped 2001 Maniacs: Beverly Hellbillys!! Man, it has been hard keeping my mouth shut. The producers put a gag order on me not to say a word till after we had finished the shoot. I had so many journalists emailing me, it was so hard!
We shot in Council Bluffs, Iowa. I had never been there before, but I really enjoyed it... well, everything but the mosquitoes! Yikes!
This film is going to be insane! The first time I felt this way is when we all sat down in LA for the table read. That’s when I first met Bill Moseley, and the rest of the cast. Wow, it just came together. Bill was amazing. He is so good, and brings his own colorful flavor to the role of Mayor Buckman. I had read the script, but to see everyone play their characters… it took on a life of its own. That’s when I got really excited, and felt we had something really special. I just remember Tim Sullivan, our amazing director, look over at me, and we were both thinking the same thing… "Wow! This is rad!!"
The twelve days in Iowa was like a high that I still haven't come down from. Every time we shot a scene, the excitement would just build. Sometimes when you shoot a film, you think, “Oh, I loved this scene or that scene.” In this movie every scene was insane! I'm just going to say, if you think the first one was crazy, this movie is 1000 times crazier! There is some sick stuff in this film that will blow your mind. It blew mine and I’m in the movie!
I have an insane scene with Ogre from Skinny Puppy and Repo. I don’t think a scene like this has ever been shot. It is very Clockwork Orange. And of course, one of the most talented actresses ever – Lin Shaye. Lin is such a creative, amazing person. Everyday she is filled with these incredible ideas that just elevate her character of Granny. She is a very gifted talent. She inspires me.
We had a very special cast and crew, but none of it would have existed without Tim Sullivan. He is amazing, he knew exactly what he wanted in every scene. He is so great. He wrote this sick script, storyboarded everything – even down to writing the songs for the film and arranging the choreography for this wacko dance all the maniac girls do. He is a solid director with a real vision. Without him there would be no Maniacs!
