You might expect the final Tuesday before Halloween to be jam-packed with new horror titles -- but that's most definitely not the case for this Tuesday. By my count we only have one "new" release, a whole bunch of catalog titles, and an animated prequel to a horror-style sci-fi video game. Anyway, this week should be spent watching stuff like The Exorcist, ALIEN, and (of course) Halloween. So maybe save your spending money for November...
Zombie Strippers -- It's all right there in the title, folks. Zombies invade a seedy strip-club, and lots of gore / nudity ensues. Benefits from a strong sense of humor, but that kinda ruins the horror angle. Then again, you don't often get to see Robert Englund co-starring with Jenna Jameson. Extras include a cast / crew commentary, some deleted scenes, and a pair of featurettes.
The Beyond -- One of Lucio Fulci's goriest efforts hits the DVD shelves (again) courtesy of Grindhouse Releasing. Definitely worth seeing if you don't know your Fulci.
Pieces -- Also from Grindhouse is this thoroughly nasty hack 'em up that uses the tagline "You don't have to go to Texas for a chainsaw massacre!" And it's true. Pieces is a gory, sleazy, grimy, and entirely amusing piece of early-'80s horror cheese. This 2-disc special edition comes packing all sorts of goodies, including featurettes, interviews, and the original Spanish audio track. Neat.
13 Hours in a Warehouse -- Five thugs are stalked in a haunted former movie studio. I just like the title. Very descriptive.
Shiver -- Been hearing good things about this Spanish import. It's about a light-sensitive teenager who moves to a remote village, only to be suspected of several nasty murders. It's on the queue.
Poultrygeist -- Troma's newest is a broad horror comedy about a chicken restaurant that was built on a burial ground -- which means killer chickens. Expect a DVD that's over-stuffed with extra features, because that's how Troma rolls.
Dead Space: Downfall -- If you're looking forward to the new sci-fi / horror video game called Dead Space, then you might want to start with this animated prequel.
Synapse Aussie-fest -- Genre-lovin' distributor Synapse re-release a bunch of interesting old genre flicks from Australia: Strange Behavior, Thirst, Patrick, and Dark Forces. I just ranked 'em in order of quality.
