The days after Halloween are always a little gloomy to me, because it means I have another eleven months to wait until it's once again "normal" to be obsessed with all things horror. And of course the scary flicks start tapering off at the local video store. But for Tuesday number one of November '08 we actually do have a few titles of interest. Operative word being "few."
The pick of the week would have to be Transsiberian, a chilly thriller from Brad Anderson, director of the fantastic The Machinist and the even cooler Session 9. This one stars Woody Harrelson, Emily Mortimer, and Ben Kingsley, and it's about a bunch of nefarious activities that take place during the planet's longest train ride. Looks like the only extra feature is a making-of mini-doc, but the movie's worthy of (at least) a rental.
Next up is a video sequel called Return to Sleepaway Camp, and if the title alone is enough to make you want to see it, then yeah ... you're in for an experience. It seems pretty obvious that nobody involved is taking this flick very seriously, and the over-ripe line readings do deliver a few chuckles along the way. But if you're in it for the gory and/or scary stuff, well, let's just say you should bring your sense of humor. The plot? Someone's killing off a bunch of stunningly obnoxious kids at, yep, a summer camp. Plus the tag-line ("Kids Can Be So Mean!") kinda cracks me up.
Then we have a Lionsgate pick-up called Chill, which looks to be (probably loosely) based on H.P. Lovecraft's story "Cool Air." The cast includes Thomas Calabro, Ashley Laurence, and James Russo, so at least you'll have some familiar faces to hang out with. As usual, LG puts together an undeniably nifty DVD cover. The jury's still out on the flick itself.
Last and probably least (but man I can't wait till Netflix brings it) is something called Moscow Zero, which stars Val Kilmer as some sort of demonic gatekeeper who doles out the evil from his lair beneath Russia. (I think.) Also on board are Vincent Gallo, Sage Stallone, and the three-headed villainy punch of A) Joss Ackland, Joaquim de Almeida, and Rade Serbedzija. (You might not know the names, but you definitely know the faces.)
Ah, and for the TV fans: Reaper Season One comes out this week, and I keep hearing it's a pretty cool show. And next week, the Hellboy's back and cooler than ever.
