The bad news is: This is one of the lamest horror DVD days of the year. Period. As a matter of fact, I don't even need to break out the bullet points this week. Your shopping trip begins and ends with a copy of Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, which is one of the densest, warmest, and most entertaining fantasy-action flicks of the last ten years. I like it well enough the first time I saw it, but after picking through the extras, the audio commentaries, and (of course) the main feature (three times total), I'm pretty much crazy in love with this flick. No, it's not really "scary" horror, but it's got some great monsters, a story full of dark fantasy, and a lot of cool action. And the DVD is as stocked as you'd expect from a Del Toro film. Extras include a pair of commentaries (one with the director and another with a trio of cast members), a 2.5-hour (!) documentary on the making of the film, and enough featurettes, galleries, and doo-hickeys to keep you busy all weekend. Probably one of my favorite DVDs of the year.
After that ... the drop-off is pretty steep. If you're a slasher fan who owns a Blu-Ray player, you can pick up Black Christmas today. (Yes, the original. I'll pretend you didn't even ask.) Beyond that we have stuff called Point of Contact (which sounds a lot like The Sixth Sense) and Blood Wars (a vampire horror comedy starring Tony Todd and C. Thomas Howell), as well as a triple feature Raw Feed box set that includes Rest Stop, Sublime, and Believers. (Which I'd skip.)
Also, Supernatural Season 3 on Blu-Ray. That's like ... it. And next week isn't much better. Sorry.
