Friday the 13th

OK, kids. You've been patient. We've all suffered through multiple weeks of sincerely LAME horror DVDs ... but today is a big day. I hope you saved a few dollars, especially if you're a Jason freak...

Here's the rundown on the new Friday the 13th sequel discs: Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th Part 5: A New Beginning, and Friday the 13th: Jason Lives hit "Deluxe Edition" today, and they're absolutely stocked with great goodies. Part 4, for example, has deleted gore, a great mockumentary, AND a "fan track" from a pair of filmmakers who've never even worked on a Jason movie ... but man, you'd never know it. (Plus Adam Green and Joe Lynch are funny dudes.) The mockumentary piece runs across all three discs, actually, and it's a dryly amusing breakdown of Jason's nefarious activities ... as if they happened in real life. Yeah, one of those "true crime" documentaries. Rather fun! Each flick also comes with a director's commentary, original trailers, and random chunks of gore.

THEN you can leap over to the Friday the 13th remake, which also hits DVD today, and you can do so via the theatrical cut OR the 9-minute-longer "killer cut," which has more boobs, more gore, and a new scene of Jason throwing a tantrum. Me, I like extra gore, so I'd opt for the "killer cut." Extras are, however, distressingly skimpy: All we get are some extended scenes and a 10-minute behind-the-scenes featurette. Hmph.

Last but not least, it looks like we're getting Blu-Ray discs for Friday the 13th Part 2 and Friday the 13th Part 3 today. Enjoy those.

And then we get The Cell 2, and yes I'm talking about a sequel to the old Jennifer Lopez movie that nobody ever talk about (or demands a sequel for).

If you're a fan of the old Mystery Science Theater 3000 (and who isn't), then you might want to check out the Rifftrax discs for Night of the Living Dead, Little Shop of Horrors, Carnival of Souls, and/or The House on Haunted Hill. I know I will. These guys crack me up.

And of course we get our weekly allowance of "flicks we've never heard of but will probably watch on cable some day." Stuff like Born (Kane Hodder and Denise Crosby), The Sender (Michael Madsen and Robert Vaughn), and  .... Terror at Blood Fart Lake, which is a real title and real gross.

But yeah, today's a Jason day. Enjoy!

Next week: Horror flicks from Vinnie Jones and Crispin Glover!
