DVD Dissection -- June 30th, 2009

This is one weak week. I can think of two titles worthy of (perhaps) a rental, and not much more.

Fans of Japanese horror may be interested in the remake of the classic Kwaidan, and the new one comes from Hideo Nakata, director of several 'Rings' and maybe a Grudge too. (Nope, Dark Water, actually.) The 1957 original is considered one of the best horror films (perhaps) ever, so I'll approach this one with a dash of skepticism. But approach I shall.

In the completely opposite direction we have Sea Beast, which looks to be another one of those cheeseball "Maneater" Sci-Fi Channel titles. I bet it's about a beast that lives in the sea. Corin Nemec stars, thereby proving that Parker Lewis can indeed lose.

The rest? Stuff you'd be likely to skip: My Bloody Roommates is an amusing title, but we also get Dead By Dawn 2: The Return (for all those Dead By Dawn 1 fans), generic titles like The Header and Hidden Floor, a 1981 obscurity called Scream (no relation), and something conveniently called "Horrible." These are dark days for the horror freaks, I know.

Next week? Another J-horror sequel, a re-issue of a vampire classic, and a little-seen Dennis Quaid chiller that I'm rather curious about.
