FEARnet just put together their top 25 haunted house movie list. It's a good list, good choices. Of course with any top lists there will be conflict. Like for years whenever I would see a "top sexiest woman" or " hottest babes" list, the number one spot was always Eva Longoria. This boggled my mind! Attractive, sure... number one hottest? I think not.
I guess my point is, I'm not going to pick the list apart and shuffle titles because a top list is so subjective and all opinions are valid. Ok, wait, I take that back. I just looked at the list again and noticed that The Shining ranks lower than Poltergeist! That's just ridiculous! I mean it's the fucking Shining! Stanley Kubrick! Jack Nicolson!! Whoa, hold on, and The Amityville Horror?! That movie wasn't even that good. WTF!! What idiot put this list together? Why don't you just bump Beetlejuice to number one?! Alright sorry, that was uncalled for. It's just a stupid list, right? Come to think of it I haven't even seen all of these movies. I'll just shut up.
Anyway, what this list did get me thinking about was the fact that I have personally experienced something ghostly. Now, when dealing with anything spiritual or super natural I usually subscribe to the "I don't know" philosophy. Though one day about two years ago I became a believer... I think.
I was on tour with my band and in a club in Washington. We had loaded in and were waiting to begin soundcheck. I was standing on the floor facing the stage talking to my drummer. He was sitting behind his drum kit. Now, to his right was an old piano and on top of the piano was a big chime sort of thing. Not a wind chime, but a musical instrument.
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, the chimes moved as if someone had run their hands through them. Not a little tinkle, but a full sweep. Clearly, deliberately. We both froze and looked at each other and said almost simultaneously, "did you see that?" Ok, I know that it doesn't seem like a big deal. It wasn't some screaming apparition chasing me down a dark hallway, but it was spooky as fuck. I instantly went though possibilities. Wind. Nope, all doors were closed and no air conditioner blowing. Sound vibration. Nope, totally quiet. Someone touched it. Nope, just the drummer on stage and he was sitting a good ten feet away. I turned and half jokingly asked a bartender if the club was haunted and without missing a beat he said YES. Apparently the staff sees things all the time. Ghostly figures on stairways and bottles flying off the shelves were common occurrences.
I've always remembered that day as proof that haunting on some level is real. Pretty cool to think that souls of lives past could be out there observing us. Also a bummer considering all the weird shit I like to do in private.
Anybody out there seen a ghost?
