True Blood

Shooting on the third season of True Blood is well under way, and with it comes more casting notices.

Today's casting announcements come to us from EW and THR.

First up is James Frain.  Frain is that actor whose name you probably don’t know, but who is on everything.  He shows up on a show and you exclaim, “Hey! It’s that guy!”  Frain is probably best known for his role in The Tudors, but has also been seen in TV shows such as Invasion, 24, FlashForward, and various Law & Orders.  Frain will play Franklin Mott, Tara’s new love interest.  Mott is a vampire with an “immediate and torrid connection” to Tara.  Sounds like Mott has ulterior motives, no?

Next up, Sam gets a biological mother in Melinda Mickens, played by J. Smith-Cameron.  Ms. Mickens is described as “dirt-poor, hung-over, and trashy-looking.”  I love Sam, but frankly I expected nothing more from his birth mother.  He seems to emotionally damaged that it couldn’t come entirely from being abandoned.  Although they already did the alcoholic-mom thing with Tara’s mom,  I doubt that Sam will be as willing to help his mother.  Smith-Cameron is best known as a Tony Award-winning actress, but has appeared on the screens large (The Rage: Carrie 2) and small (various Law & Orders).

Finally, another matriarch comes to Bon Temps.  Alfre Woodard will appear as Lafayette’s mother.  Woodard will not be a series regular, just a “guest star,” likely because she has also signed on to star in a pilot for TNT.  Woodard is Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning, with roles in Desperate Housewives, The Forgotten, and Three Rivers, just to name a few.
