Ray Harryhausen appreciation thread

Ray Harryhausen appreciation thread

WadeVC's picture

At the suggestion of Muphukka, I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread for fans of Ray Harryhausen and the cinema magic he has created.

I, for one, absolutely love all of the Ray Harryhausen films, from 20 Million Miles to Earth and Valley of the Gwangi to Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans.

Ray Harryhausen and his famous stop-motion animation is a icon in the early years of the horror genre who was (and still is) a very big influence of this genre.

If you are a fan of Ray Harryhausen, give a shout out here and share with others your favorite movie or movies by this creative genius.

Doesn't seem to be alot of love here for the one-time master of special effects.

Along with the movies already mentioned (clash of the titans, in particular) i love his work in the sinbad movies.

Much props for his genious and vision.

Harryhausen changed the way I viewed movies. I lived for that stuff. I really did.

No one has mentioned MIGHTY JOE YOUNG yet either.

SOme of the vreatures that he put together for his movies were completely fantastic. I think that even though CLASH OF THE TITANS was rather wack on a lot of levels, the KRACKEN and the MEDUSA were two of his greatest achievements.

I know that he did a lot of obscure tv ads and Christmas stuff too. I have this fat-assed coffee table book with all of that stuff in it, but once again, i am on a laptop at a coffee shop, and I will get to that when i get home. I'll post some more and do my best to keep this thread alive.

Anyone remember that movie where they go to the moon? Ant moon people were in it or something. I can't remember the title...anyone?

Thanks for the thread WadeVC...there is truth here.

Can you give any more details than that? Was it a B&W film, silent, color....was it a Harryhausen, because that doesn't sound familiar to me as anything Harryhausen did.

The movie is called THE FIRST MEN ON THE MOON.

Here is the IMDB write-up

I saw it at a sci-fi fantasy and horror conference when I was a kid. The movie was great then, and I am sure that it would hold up today. I have got to find the thing and watch it again.

I'll always have a soft spot for the Sinbad movies, namely Golden Voyage and Eye of the Tiger., Jason and the Argonauts ruled!

I loved all the Ray Harryhausen films except for Clash of the titans. Clash was the first film he made that didn't use his stop motion and the story was one of the worst also. All his other films were really well done stories with special effects.

Dude, I'm sorry, but Ray did use stop motion for this film. Watch it again and check the jerkiness. That was no CG or people in costume thing. That was thelast (I think) of his serious stop motion epics.

I don't think he used CG for this movie but I think they mentioned that they were using a different type of effect because of the length of time it took to do stop motion. Don't remember where I heard this from though so I could be wrong.
