Don't take me wrong, but I get a charge when the wanna be Siskle & Eberts come on here and tear apart the old movies..cheezy..crappy..I've added af few to list myself..the newer ones..Most of the critics don't have a clue..how could they?? Most of em were sitll being used for glue to keep pages of the daddies girly magazine together..In the very early 60's the gang would head to the Y and for a dime if ya had your own towel and go to open swim Saturday mornings..a little ping pong..some hoops and everybody would go like the wind to get back home..grab a cup of kool-aid and a couple of those fresh bakes oatmeal with the jam in the middle cookies..head to the TV and there it was...Saturday Monster Movie Matinee..on the 12 inch black and white RCA..and the Classics were on..ah wait the movie was on..Monsters..Werewolfs..Mummies..Vampires..Ghouls..it just did'nt get any better..and all the movies on now are just continuations from then..They're called b-grades now, but they were the real deal then..So before you pick apart these gems..what are they doing different now.other than the obvious..graphic's and sound..they are the same movies...The movie that has made thee most money ever in the history of movies..is Avatar and was shot down for the top Awards...why???? because it isn't a gone with the wind..disney..wipe the tears away chick flick..it's a sci-fi/horror/thriller type movie thats why!!..Horror and Monster movies are always gonna be just what they are...my kinda movies..so instead of critisizing..worring about what some directors thoughts were..how great the actors were...go grab a cup of kool-aid..a couple of them oatmeal with the jam in the middle cookies...lol..get in front of the flat screen hdtv and just enjoy tommorows new soon to be b-grade movie......relax...go places ya never been before..give yourself a break..don't worry if it's cheezy or crappy..just watch the movie...as always to each their own.....Peace...Joe

AVATAR IS EPIC, CLASSIC SCI-FI easily with roots in a good western from Americas like CHEYANNE AUTUMN, CHATOS LAND, THE SEARCHERS. With the aliens taking the place of Native Americans and corporations taking the place of all the European Countries that first came here and the immigrants and citizens that followed. Beautifully done.

But as Joe sez, all these movies owe to the movies before. The early FRANKENSTEINS, DRACULAS and Wolfman and all the "b"s that followed. To enjoy them you have to have a perspective of time not just the time the film took place, but what Hollywood was making, what some of the politics, crime and paranoia of the time were. The special effects in use at the time. They all have something to enjoy. Unless of course they ARE pure shit.  . . . . . . then. . . . . nevermind.APPLAUSE

Another thing to bear in mind is that a lot of the movies that inspired the directors and filmmakers today are the same ones you're referring to now. THEY enjoyed the classics, it's what helped motivate them to go into the filmmaking field and the horror genre.

But there are movies in every period of filmmaking, since filmmaking was invented, that just plain suck, regardless of the era or available technology, and so on and so forth. These are what I like to refer to as "popcorn throwing material". Perfect for laughing and throwing popcorn at while watching them at home, curled up on the couch relaxing. The dogs love 'em! They get to clean up all the popcorn that hits the floor, lol!Wink

AVATAR is a MUST ! The movie builds textbook to a climax. The movie feels long at first so you have to just soak in the imagery and color, but it picks up momentum to a great climax. The movie is an EPIC by any standards, except maybe for slightly challenged humans.

Finally let us not forget that as movie making made huge leaps forward on the shoulders of the classics before them. One, kind of sort of did, a cell phone video movie with scenes straight from classic ABBOTT AND COSTELLO/ LAUREL AND HARDY CLASSICS which made the greatest generation laugh BUT SUPPOSEDLY SCARED THIS GENERATION. ( the powder on the floor scene, lol).

I'll check Avatar out man. Seems like it's really good from all I've read. And if you're saying so, then it must be true.Smile

Just REwatched REVENGE OF THE CREATURE yesterday, lol. Hadnt seen it literally in a few decades. GREAT old school fun AND. . . . . . . I had forgotten an uncredited appearance by a young, 20ish CLINT EASTWOOD in a bit part with a few lines. I enjoy those old Universal B&W. Classic is the word.
