THE HOWLING ( 1981 ) is a classic werewolf movie. With state of the art makeup efx created by the brains behind AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON efx it restarted many fans fascination with werewolves. The SEQUELS, however. . . . . . . . frikken SUCKED and went from really bad to pure garbage. THE HOWLING REBORN tries but. . . . . . it DESERVES to be straight to dvd. Definately NOT a movie worth spending money on in theaters. BUT. . . . . MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OF THE SEQUELS. It seems that while they spent time and money on plot and halfway decent actors, the efx budget was lacking. A quick cgi transformation or two that are kinda done on the sly so you dont see them so well. . . probably a good thing. The WWs are the great two legged, tall and nasties from the original and there is a not so bad werewolf battle but its NOT in the caliber of the original or more recent ones like DOG SOLDIERS. The WWs dont even appear for more than 2/3s of the movie. So dont go rushing if you are a werewolf fan. They did attempt a good story but theres not enough action. A balance of the two would have been nice as would MORE "werewolfing". It IS supposed to be a lycanthrope movie. Forget about mood or atmosphere, its more a monster movie, per se.
Anyone see this? Opinions?

Re: THE HOWLING - REBORN
Absolutely LOVED the first original 'Howling'-terrific movie! I had actually read the book it was based on before the film came out-and they are 2 completely different stories-but both were equally good. The Howling sequels DID suck-however, each one had to do with werewolf lore from different countries and mythologies-so they actually gave us a glimpse of how they're envisioned by different cultures-so in THAT aspect-they served their purpose although the storylines and acting were awful.
I really enjoyed 'Howling V-the Rebirth'-it was like an old Agatha Christie 'whudunnit' mystery on the order of her famous '10 Little Indians' with the added twist that the killer was a werewolf-which i bet is something that Christie never would have thought of!
I've seen the trailer for 'Reborn' and it looks terrible. It might be decent as an average werewolf movie-but i don't think it deserves the 'Howling' title. They could have marketed it just as well as another title-but with the current state of re-makes and reboots-they're going to cash in on the franchise and try to make more money off a 'dead horse' concept other than be original.
@Spook
Interesting what you said about HOWLING 5. I NEVER SAW IT as I wrote off the series after two sequels, the one in Australia ( TURD of a movie ) and another with a blond scream queen whut name I forget at the moment. BUT. . . . my point IS that the first werewolf who-dun-it was probably Peter Cushings THE BEAST MUST DIE where guests are invited to a mansion only to be told that the host suspects one of them to be a werewolf and that they must find a way to expose and kill the beast.
@HF
That sounds EXACTLY like 'Howling V'-i wonder if the film-makers were inspired by the Cushing movie? I've never heard of 'The Beast Must Die' but will definitely have to make a point of locating it. Thanks for the heads-up HF-i'll try to track it down.
Reborn/Spooks
I just saw the trailor, and it looks, I have to be honest, awesome, I want to see it
Spooks, it's funny you should say Howling 5, cuz I have it on DVD, unwatched, unopened. I bought it for five dollers at Wallmart just today.
