Are there Any good remakes?

Lately I've noticed that there are more remakes then original horror movies. I don't think their that good.

the main problem is when they make these remakes the original movies essence is left out case in point the horrible texas chainsaw massacre until the directors can capture the fear placed in the originals the movies will continue to suck

Dawn of the dead is the greatest remake in my opinion.

It's hard to lump remakes into one big bucket o' blood. Some of the original movies are "inferior" to today's because of budgetary constraints, and even the differences in technology, ie, camera and film, special effects...

A lot too has to do with the director and the vision they have for the remake. Maybe they felt a certain angle was left out of the original, or the story didn't jive with the original book/script. Take "The Shining." Stephen King was very displeased with the way Kubrick took with the script, so several years ago King decided to remake the movie in HIS eyes. Personally, while the remake followed the story line and underlying psyche problems better (Nicholsen was psychotic, King's was a drunk), I think the remake sucked.

Now as for House on Haunted HIll, MUCH better, and yet much further from the original storyline. The effects, and the way it was told give it that superiority....

JMO though.....

Remakes can be fine as long as the filmmaker respects the original, and adds something new. "The Thing" and "The Fly" were probably better than the originals. "Dawn of the Dead" was really good. It's a shame, though, that it's easier to get the money to remake something than to create something new.

I agree... that's why I respect the ORIGINAL horrors out there! Take "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Low budget Ed Wood movie... SOOOOO bad, it was good. Now remake that and suffer dire consequences. But all this is not to say that I don't like remakes. Loved the new Dawn, and yes... House on Haunted Hill. And the new Hills added alot to the original. But there are so many remakes, and so few originals. It really makes me have a profound respect for the direction and the storylines of the older versions.

Now, the Hellraiser remake should be decent, provided they get Doug Bradley back... just insn't Pinhead unless it was him... and the fact that Clive Barker is directing it. Should be great!

I enjoyed the Amityville remake myself... Thought Ryan Reynolds ended up being PERFECT!... Thought he was going to be a straight comedic actor until this movie. I was thoroughly impressed!

DAWN OF THE DEAD:

The Dawn remake wasn't entirely horrible. I think it could have stood on its own two shambling, decaying feet had it not have the DAWN OF THE DEAD tag proverbially tied to its toe. It would have been a very good ORIGINAL movie.

THE THING:

...was very good, but the original is just sooo amazing that the remae doesn't even come close. I have the original RKO Radio release of THE THING (1950s) on VHS. Absolutely gorgeous color and dirt.

THE AMITYVILLE HORROR:

eh......

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE:

Give me a friggin break here. No one can EVER touch this movie. LEATHERFACE's name is not THOMAS HEWITT..its BUBBA SAWYER. Andrew Brynarski is a disgrace to Mr. Gunnar Hansen and Mr. Bill Johnston.

THE FLY:

Absolutely stunning performances by Goldblum and Davis. This is one of the better movies that brought a more modern approach to the orignal. The effects were great and the actors were terrific, the monkey kicked ass, and everyone was happy. I believe this won a few OSCARS if only one. THE BEST REMAKE OUT THERE

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD:

Very tasteful remake. Tom Savini has a very good eye behind the camera. And I'm not just kissing his ass here because its true. Also, my folks used to scare me about this one because if you listen to the T.V. the anchor says STOCKTON, CA...THAT'S MY HOMETOWN!!!

NOSFERATU:

Both of these are ingenious but I like the silent film better. Listening to the score and pondering the voice acting was a fond memory.

CAT PEOPLE:

This one was good. The original was GREAT.

THE BLOB:

Very interesting story with this one. It's not better than the original but it could have held its own as a sequel....like 30 years later type deal.

PSYCHO:

Vince Vaughn is great but come on!!! SHOT FOR SHOT!?!?!?!?!

Horrible!

THE HILLS HAVE EYES:

I actually enjoyed this one very much and I can't wait to see the second one. They look to be full fledged monsters now. No clothes or sense of humanity whatsoever...well, they never had much to begin with anyway. This is a good one.

WHEN A STRANGER CALLS:

Horrible!

13 Ghost:

Lame!

THE HAUNTING:

Give me a break!

HOUSE OF WAX:

(slicing my own friggin throat!) I'm terribly sorry Vincent Price!

CARRIE:

Quadruple horrible!

THE FOG:

Come on!!

THE HITCHER:

Don't expect much from everyone, but a magnificent performance from Sean Bean...HAIL RUTGER HAUER!!!

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL:

Regretfully lame!

I left out basically any Japanese horror movie AMERICANIZED...not that Japanese horror is good to begin with.... : )

You know what movies those ones are.
