I was hoping for a general consensus on a topic concerning scary v.s. disturbing, i.e. The Exorcist / Halloween perhaps, to movies similar to Cannibal Holocaust. Now I do know some people find the Exorcist disturbing but those people probably haven't seen CH. But who really considers disturbing movies scary? Why do some film makers insist on making movies brutally disturbing in hopes to scare the public?

I like both but i don't find either scary, i don't think cannibal holocaust is a good example of disturbing either i would have gone with films like the gateway meat, murder-set-pieces, "the vomit gore trilogy", flower of flesh and blood, wedding trough, visitor Q and all the other far out bizzare extreme stuff.

yea have to agree with klownz seen canibal holo... and was not to impressed but then again my taste in horror is very exstream i want horror and gore not some pansy ass horror that can be shown on nickalodian lol

I like both styles myself. However If I had to pick I would go with scary. If I were to pick a movie tonight, Halloween/Evil Dead/Night of the Living Dead ect would more then likely get the nod over Cannibal Holocust/Schramm/A Serbian Film. Those movies have there place and can be really well done ( Henry: Portait of a Serial Killer comes to mind) but I need to be in the right mindset.
Sometimes I like to watch
Sometimes I like to watch disturbing movies, when there isn't a new scary movie I haven't seen or want to yet. I prefer scary, but I like the ones that are more believable, that makes them all the more satisfying.
Disturbing ones, well they usually end up turning my gut, but I don't loose sleep over them, except in the case of The Human Centipede part 2. I found that the most highly disturbing thing I have ever set my eyes on, nearly had the feel of a snuff film, I won't be watching that one again.
Fear takes center stage at all times, and it looks like there are some good ones coming next year *thumbs up!

Disturbing to me would be movies like: Saw Franchise, Exorcist Franchise, or some zombie movies, etc. I like them and watch them still but I think like the haunting in conn. or them Paranormal Activities are more on scary. I jump if the movie is real good, but not a lot of movies do that for me. I would base a horror movie after one of my worst nightmares! But directors have not hit that light switch for me yet, and with the technology, they should be able too. But no, Movies like "wrong Turn" , "Jeepers Creepers", or any type of slasher movie are more disturning too me then scary! That's my opinion and I'll stick too it! :)

Both of these ideas are subjective. What I consider disturbing and scary isn’t necessarily what you think as either one. I think a nice blend of the two makes for an interesting horror movie. For me, disturbing is messed up imagery and scenes that make you think on a deeper level than just simply being on the screen, which can marry into scary because you’re frightened by those ideas and images. Disturbing isn’t always how gross or graphic something is, but a simple mental nugget that clings to your brain long after the movie has finished. You can have both without neglecting either one.

I personally love the Exorcist, I think it's scary, and probably disturbing due to the special effects in the movie (no cgi) which made the movie more realistic. Plus taking into account the time when it was released, I think most people back then would have consider it VERY disturbing.-
