Favorite REMAKES

I know, I know. . . . . . many people pan remakes or the THOUGHT of a remake without giving it a chance. Purists at heart ? Or narrow minded ? Or simply sold on the idea that the first is a classic ? (A genuine truth for most great movies) BUT. . . . . on many an occasion a remake has either stood side by side with the original, kinda the old classic and the NEW classic, and other times the remake has actually triumphed over the original. My favorite remakes are

THE FLY, RETURN OF THE FLY. (LOVE the great Vinny Price but the remakes rock) THE BLOB, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, THE CRAZIES, THE HILLS HAVE EYES, THE THING, HOUSE OF WAX, THE TOOLBOX MURDERS (2004), FRIGHT NIGHT.

What are your favorite remakes ? Why ?

I think The Thing, The Fly, The Blob and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers are superior remakes.

I also like Dawn of the Dead. It was faster paced and a bit more graphic than the original.

I have no problem with remakes. If they can bring something new to the table then they're alright by me.

Love the inclusion of The Crazies and Fright Night in your favorite remake's list but no Last House on The Left?

I have to say that as a HUGE fan of Let the Right One In I was a skeptic on the remake, that isn't even bringing in to account the fact that it was only about 2 years old, but Let Me In is a damn fine flick and i go back an forth on which one is the actual better film. That alone, for me, means the remake was successful.
Keeping along the same lines, We Are What We Are has been remade and will be out later this year. Again, i liked the original quite a bit, and this one is supposed to be a departure form that film, so we shall see how that turns out when all is said and done. I have high hopes on this one because i like the director.

And Maniac is coming out in June and that is a good/worthy remake.

LOL, I didnt want to include ALL my fave remakes to leave room for others to chat. I do indeed love the remake of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and often argued with others that LET ME IN stood side by side easily with the original. I also enjoyed the casual reference to the book as when the little vamp tries to let him know that he/she isnt what the boy thinks. LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was a vast improvement over the original B hit with superior actors. What does anyone think of the I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE remake ?

I love the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake. Their opening scene with the little girl was about as creepy/dramatic as it gets particuolarly as it continues to the fantastic aerial view of the disaster expanding throughout the city ! Loved the gun shop guy sub story and Ving Rhames was great.

Am pretty sure all the regulars here at fearnet know I hate remakes of Asian horror but if I was to pick an example of a good remake am going to point my finger straight at the ring

I also love the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Although in my opinion most remakes are not quite up to par with the originals.

The Hills have Eyes, it stayed with the same premise but it was violent, gory and really didnt shit on the original. Piranha 3D was alot of fun Boobs, gore and the violence but never winked at you and said see look look fun right. It knew what it was and celebrated that.
and finally Silent Night it brought the same premise but made it good gory slasher fun.

I enjoyed the BLACK CHRISTMAS (2006) remake. It gave a little more back story and had some great scenes like dragging the body by the eye sockets. I also enjoyed NIGHT OF THE DEMONS with Shannon Elizabeth and a great little cameo of Linnea Quigley. I know some peeps dont seem to like it but again, gave more of a back story. Not so much better as one that stands next to the original and entertained. Course the washed out and up Edward Furlong added nothing.
