I don't know about you, but when it comes to "scary," Ghosts are what do it for me. I've watched a fair bit of "horror" in my day (Freddy, Michael, Jason...you know, the boys) and they are all sort of freaky in their own way, but they just don't scare me on film like they did when I was 8. They sort of default to blood, guts and creative (though sometimes this is a "fail") death scenes.
I know the bloodsuckers are in vogue these days but you know what? Moody, metrosexual, effeminate vampires that sparkle in the sunlight don't scare me. They make groan, but not with fear. The movies that scare me and the stories that scare me involve ghosts. There's just something different about them.
The one dream I really recall within the last several years invovles a ghost. In the dream I was with a friend who was showing me and some other people a new house when I looked and there was this asian wearing a school uniform and staring angrily at me. Then she slowly disappeared. Ghost. The dream scared me so much I woke up from it in the middle of the night hyperventilating. it may not sound scary to read the description but...you weren't there, man. You know what I mean?
Ghosts are just different.
That's probably why I've chosen to write about them in my books. They creep me out.
If you have a creative outlet a particular fear you have could be an interesting source of inspiration. Just think about it.
