War of the Worlds (1953)

I'm not talking about the crappy "Look at me, it's Tom Cruise" remake, but rather the original and still the best 1953 version of War of the Worlds!

For those who have never seen the original, you will be quite surprised at just how far off the mark the remake was compaired to the original...way off!

This is a classic "Martians invade Earth" movie, based on the 1898 (no, that's not a typo) novel by H.G. Wells.

The radio broadcast on October 30th, 1938 was delivered so artistically by Orson Wells that there was a mass hysteria on the east coast by the listeners of this chilling radio program.

The movie, although not as gripping as the radio broadcast, is still a great piece of SciFi/horror that will keep you glued to your seat from start to finish. The FX for the time were quite good, and the storyline one that has lasted 108 years.

I've seen this version and think it's pretty good and considering when it was made, the effects weren't all that bad.

I believe the special effects were done by George Pal. Much better film than the remake even taking into account the special effects.

This movie is one I've LOVED since the first time I watched it.The new WOTW doesn't hold a candle to this one!!I'm a big fan of Gene Barry,he did a great job!! Cutting edge effects for it's time!!

My favorite - though there was anotehr remake before the Cruise one that was decent.

Now, the best I think is listening to the repeats of the radio broadcast. When I was a child we had a local radio station that used to do this. It used to do some of the old horror radio shows on the weekends and would do WotW around the holidays. There is something to be said about not seeing but imagining.

Hey sweet sister!! Do you remember who was in the remake after the original?? I'd like to see that! Thanks!

The nice thing about a Spielberg remake is that he is a confident enough director to take some liberties with the original storyline. Unlike recent remakes ("The Omen," "Psycho," "The Wicker Man," etc.), the "WOTW" remake feels real within the context of contemporary life.

For instance, the opening invasion scene was clearly inspired by the attacks of 9/11. It had that same surreal quality, with people running down the city streets covered in ash. I was in Manhattan on 9/11, and understood what Spielberg was drawing upon to make it feel real.

I recently watched the I'm Tommy Criuse version and found it like other remakes lacking. The remake relyed to heavily on the special effects. Anyways the orginal Starring Gene Barry was great, the ending narration of why the Martian invasion failed was from a Christain point of view.

As I have said in previous post's the classics should not be remade repackaged or redone.
