Between the two films Planet Terror was the one for me. I think Death Proof should have been the first film to play since it is a bit longer in dialogue going into the 2nd hour with so much talking and very little action really blows.

So what do you guys thing Plant Terror or Death Proof ?

Death Proof rocked! Too much meaningless splat in 'Terror for me. Love fast cars, not fast drips.

hammiesue or anyone else -- are there car chase movies out there like Death Proof?

Tarantino listed his inspirations as Vanishing Point and Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry but neither of those were much like Death Proof.

Death Proof wasn't a direct homage to the old race movies but it did add several small nods to them throughout the film.

What he meant by inspiration was in the way that the car stunts were performed, not relying on cgi. All physical stunts just like in the old days.

You may remember the hood ornament on the black chevy nova at the beginning of the movie. That was the same ornament used by Kris Kristofferson's character "Rubber Duck" in the movie "Convoy" where he played a truck driver being pursued by a corrupt county sheriff.

The most significant homage would be the white Dodge Challenger and references to "Vanishing Point". That movie was actually about a former stock car racer and police officer who is supposed to deliver a car across country. He takes an impossible bet to deliver it in only a few days and breaks several laws in the attempt.

There were also similarities to "Duel" a movie about a man who has a battle of wits with a psychotic semi driver.

If you look at the license plate on the Chevy Nova, you may notice that it is JJZ-109, the exact same number used on Steve McQueen's Mustang Fastback in "Bullitt". That movie is most famous for it's chase scene through downtown San Francisco involving the Ford Mustang and a black Dodge Charger similar to the one used in "Death Proof".

You know your carchase movies, allenidaho. "Convoy" sounds great, did you like it?

And you're right, "Death Proof" evokes dread similar to "Duel." You guys have probably seen the "Duel"-inspired "Joy Ride"? It's not a great film, but I like it a lot. Steve Zahn is really enjoyable in it.

Yeah, I've always had a certain appreciation for old car chase movies. Big fan of old school muscle cars mostly. My favorite is definately the Plymouth Barracuda from the Phantasm movies. I think they started with a '71 and then switched to a '73 convertible if memory serves.

"Convoy" is ok. Not the greatest and high on the cheese factor. But you have to keep in mind that it was done on a very low budget back in the early 70's.

One thing that really sticks out in my mind about it is the almost comical fight scene that sparks the chase by the county sheriff. Half a dozen truckers fighting with deputies and being thrown into just about anything breakable. It was very slapstick.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I'm wondering if I should give Bullitt another try. I rented it about a year ago. The car chase was really cool, and and I can see how influential it was simply because it felt like constant deja vu -- all kinds of movies taking cues from its style afterwards, if I'm right. But I was largely bored with the story. I don't know what I expected; Steve McQueen was impeccably cool but I didn't think he was a very engaging character. I wasn't excited to see whatever he'd get thrown into next.

The coolest car chase I've seen recently is the one in Doomsday -- wow!

Doomsday was such a great movie. I was very impressed by it. "If you're hungry, here's a piece of your friend". Great line.

As for Bullitt, the story isn't all that great. The chase scene is awesome though. Steve McQueen plays a detective trying to solve the average cliche murder mystery. No real knockout storyline there.

I preferred death proof actually but I agree with the fact that it should have gone first if ro no other reason than the fact that they take place explicitly in the same universe means the planet terroe's ending renders pretty much all of deathproof moot, its like a 2 hour flashback though albeit an enjoyable one.

Planet Terror and Death Proof are two completely different movies. They are both awesome, but Planet Terror was my favorite of the two. I really liked Death Proof, but it took too long for its setups. They should have played Death Proof before Planet Terror in the Theatres.
