SALEMS LOT: i own both versions on dvd. read the book many moons ago.i actually watched the remake about 3 months ago.i have to say i liked them both.but i kind of sway towards the original.why you ask....for one even though the main vampire is not in the movie that long he kind of reminded me of nosferatu.alot more scarier looking than rutger hauer in the remake.who also had a small part. any comments?...any comparisions between the two versions?

The original. When his missing friend shows up in the middle of the night floaring at the window, freaked me out!

Except for the scene where the kids kill the school bus driver, the remake just wasn't as scary as the original. The remake was more faithful to King's book -- especially in showing all the really dark quirks you can find in a small town -- but Rutger Hauer was big letdown. Remember the scene in the original where the Nosferatu-like vampire materializes out of the shadows and clacks the boy's parents' heads together? Now THAT was scary.

The book and its prequel in Night Shift are really good. However, i don't recall being impressed with either film version. I'd have to rewatch the original though as its been many years since i viewed it.

Anybody ever see the sequel, "Return To Salem's Lot" with Michael Moriarity? Larry Cohen ("It's Alive," "Q," "God Told Me To," etc.) directed it. It was a creepy idea (a town populated entirely by vampires hires a human writer to tell their story, and he & his son have to live there). The effects weren't very good, especially not the "Nosferatu" makeup on the head vampire. Moriarity had fun with it, and it was cool seeing Ronee Blakley (the drunken mom from "Nightmare On Elm Street") put in a brief cameo as his bitchy ex-wife.
