this is the best movie, no other exorcism movie will ever be as good

THAT'S  AN EASY ANSWER FOR ME.  NO OTHER MOVIE WAS EVER MADE OR CONCEIVED WITH THE PREMISIS THAT "THE EXORCIST" DELT WITH.

PRIOR TO IT; I THINK "ROSEMARY'S BABY" WAS ABOUT IT.

ISN'T THAT HOW "CLASSICS" GET THEIR REP?  BEING THE FIRST OF THEIR KIND THAT STARTS A PHENOMENON?  (PSYCHO, EXORCIST, JAWS, HALLOWEEN, STAR WARS, NIGHT/LIVING DEAD, ETC.)

ENLARGE TO SEE A CLIP FROM THE CLASSIC.

BULLYING SUCKS

I do believe it is slightly over-rated. In the definition of "overrated" being that something is made out to be more than it really is. Growing up i was told is was one the scaroest (if not the scariest) pieces of cinema in the world. Though it was scary, it was not AS scary as many led me to believe. And i did see it when i was 9 so me being scared from a movie was still a very prominent possiblity.

I have to agree that it IS a classic, it IS the BEST and only excellent exorcism movie. Once you've seen this, there is no need to see the other garbage, BUT I have to agree with neener that it is NOT the scariest, creepiest horror flick ever. Even when I went to theaters and actually saw people walk out, I couldnt figure out what the big deal was.

LOL My grandmother brought my dad to go see it in the theaters when he was just a wee boy. He said people ran out in terror. People vomited. BUT that saying, its not necissarily scary. Just extremely effective. Thats why its so good. Time was actually put into it to make it good.

And i have to disagree with you HF, this isnt the ONLY good exorcism movie. the Exorcism Of Emily Rose was a great exorcism flick. Its great story telling, legitamately scary scenes, and (for once) accurate representation of a real exorcism made it very well made.

The Last Exorcism was also good.... if it werent for the damn last 15 minutes. WORST ENDING EVER!

I hear ya bud, but I didnt care for either of those flicks and couldnt even sit through THE LAST EXORCISM. For me, the next best exorcism was NOT a movie but a SCENE from the movie CONSTANTINE, when Reeves does the exorcism with the MIRROR. I thought that was a unique twist on a standard exorcism.

Well heres the thing. With exorcism movies, 90% of wether the movie is good or not is how accurate the actual exorcism ritual is. When its not then the movie loses its credibility (at least in my mind). An exorcism is a precise and flowing clockwork of a ritual. There is no "making it your own" and there are no "unique twists" on the ritual. Either you do it the way its done or you dont do it at all.

Cant agree with you there. A true exorcism is a mind numbing days long process. A MOVIE has to move along at a better clip and do something to create an atmosphere. Something scary in REAL life in an exorcism might be absolutely NOTHING in a movie. For example, I watched an incredible high wire act between two buildings. It doesnt excite me. I KNOW the skill required. . . . . STILL doesnt make it exciting. A movie exorcism, realistic and boring is a waste of time. They have to do SOMETHING to spice it up. THATS why, Regans head spins, she has demonic eyes, she levitates, etc. etc. NOT just a priest doing his thing and MAYBE the person speaking in tongues, showing marks on the body etc. They did some SERIOUS "twists" with the special efx in THE EXORCIST as well as all the imitators.

Depending on the severity of the possession/ the how powerful the demon is what factors out how long the ritual takes. But you are correct it does take multiple hours and even multiple days. And thats something that The Exorcist incorperated. The exorcism took a while.

Thats also what happens in The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. If you havent seen that you should. Better than most exorcism movies.

The Exorcist is absolutely not overrated. That is like saying Halloween or a Nightmare on Elm St. is overrated. The Exorcist was the first films to actually scare me back when I was 8 yrs old. The most effective part of the film was the tone it set. The mother knowing what was going on just above her head in her daughter's bedroom and that something fucked up could happen any minute was terrifying.
