Yes we do need more intelligent and tough women in horror films. Any idiot can produce a film with some silly girl running around almost nude screaming her head off for most of the movie. What's harder is a woman that can out think and out fight her assailant with what's at hand. The Descent was a good example of a film with lots of tough woman fighting off bizarre creatures while trapped! Besides what kind of stupid message are they sending out to the audience.

There was a great book I read in the 90's called "Men, Women, and Chainsaws" that discused the role of women in horror. Don't know if it's still in print though.

It wasn't nessarly Horror but the main character (I can't rem her name as of now?) in KISS THE GIRLS kicked some good ass...Oh and Leelee Sobereksi in the Glass House she was good for a young chick..

accually girls arent so bad as the victims because most horror films follow a certain structure. its called the "final girl" she is always teh main character faced with the killer and always is the last to servive. Not such a bad deal although a female killer some times would be nice, High tension tryed to portray that an i thought it really kicked a!

If you want to dig even further, a lot of the exploitation revenge movies of the seventies have a hell-fire spitting revenge seeking super powerful woman lead. (I Spit on Your Grave, Thriller: A Cruel Picture, etc.) Sure, they got to that point by being completely victimized and dehumanized, but if you look at the message objectively, it's actually very female possitive. "You did your worst, motherfucker, and I'm still here. My turn."
