I just finished the first book of the series, Guilty Pleasures. This book was written by Laurell K. Hamilton. There is over ten books in the series. I was wondering if anyone else has read them and what they think. I personally liked the first one. I am going to be starting the second book, The Laughing Corpse today. I am looking forward to the Lunatic Cafe (two books away).I love Werewolves!

One of the very best series, she slowly delves into the realms of Erotic Horror until eventually it becomes Romance/Sex novels with a supernatural spin of "What new power can I invent next?!?" The Merry Gentry series is like that, with powers popping up left & right every time characters get intimate, but it's been like this since book one & Anita was fairly sex-free until six or seven down the line. Ironically, I keep reading them because I like the characters, but I can recommend some others you might like as well.

Sunshine by Robin McKinley (One Shot)

The Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong (Five or six so far)

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs (sequal coming soon)

Thanks for the info on the other books. I will have to check them out.

I love this series and can't wait for the new one coming in June. Has anyone else checked out the comic book adaptation of Guilty Pleasures? It is beautiful as well as faithful. I also enjoy The Women of the Otherworld series but Laurell Hamilton has kind of spoiled me with her writing style. Her books are such a quick read that i have trouble getting into other authors books because the seem so slow.

My GF (see my profile for the link to hers) is a HUGE Laurel K Hamilton fan, reading not only her "Anita Blake" books but also her "Faery" books. To be honest, I liked her earlier stuff much more than the more recent books. I am currently re-reading "Obsidian Butterfly" because it was the first Anita Blake novel I ever read, and the one that made me fall in love with the series.

I'm about halfway through, and I can see what made me originally like the books. Original, well thought out, and very very sensual. The problem is, her more recent books have become long on sex and short on plot. Dont get me wrong, I like some good gratuitous sex in my novels as much as the next person, but, give me another reason to be reading! It seems to me, that her books have the same number of pages as they always did, but less and less is actually HAPPENING in the stories....

But thats just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Well, the comic book sold out in the Philly area quite quick, and my GF had me searching through hell and high water to get one, and when we finally did, I can only say I was mildly disappointed.

I found the story to be pretty true to the books, but the art was....well...just off.

Now let me say first off, that I am an artist, so my opinion will be harsher than others. Now when I say, "I am an artist", I dont say it in that 'Well, I am an accountant/doctor/welder or what have you by day, but I also kinda draw some.". I say it because I'm an artist. I majored in art in college, I do art for a living, its just me.

Having said that, I get down off my high horse to say this, the artist on this series made everyone in the book far too pretty. Characters like Jean-Claude are meant to be quite attractive, as that is the way they are written, but the artist made them so pretty as to be effette and androgenous. The result is a complete loss of fear and danger. The vampires should look beautiful but deadly...instead they look like posing drag queens waiting for a sugar daddy.

Now this is just my opinion, but the artist could look at hundreds of other horror artists and see how they portray something both beautiful and to be feared...in this series, its just lost.

But...as I said, my GF is a fan, so yes...we'll buy the whole series and any series that comes after.

So far my only complaint art wise has been I thought Jean Claude should have looked different myself. I thought he should have looked a bit older but everyone who reads the books probably pictured somethign just a little different then the person sitting next to them reading the same book so I let it go. I know some people who refused to read the comic because they didn't want their mental images of the characters spoiled.

Laurel K Hamilton write a very intriguing novel. I've read all the Anita Black and Merry books. SOmetimes the sex bits are a little over whelming, but over all a great read. I usually blow through a whole book in one sitting.

I have read the entire series, and while I do love them, the later ones were weak excuses for stories. They were nothing more than porn with a vampire or two thrown in. I'm not saying I don't like a good sex scene, because I do, but the series has degenerated into one excruciatly long sex scene and I think Anita has lost a lot of what made her a strong and intriguing character. That being said, I do still read every one that comes out. Once a fan, always a fan I guess. I'm still hoping the old strong Anita will resurface.

I've got to agree. I gave up on them once they started going down that road. They're not horror any more, they're romance novels. If that's your thing, great, but it's not mine. For something that's a nice mix of modern and magic that has kept its edge, try the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher. Kind of a mix of an old school noir detective story and a fantasy/horror novel. I haven't seen the show, but there's no way it can do justice to the books.

I've read most of her books and I love them. I wait impatiently for each new book to come out and then read them in a day.

I'm going to look into a couple of suggestions that someone mentioned in a previous post though, thanks!
