Stephen King Novels

Stephen King has made numerous novels and short stories which in return many have became full length features. One of my books is the Cycle of the Werewolf-although it is a very short read it had everything that it need to make the story worthwhile. The movie that matches this book closely is named Silver Bullet.

Gotta go with the Dark Tower series. Does anyone know if there will ever be a series of movies based on these books? I think that would be an excellent idea.

The Shining isn't just a great horror novel, it's a great work of literature all together. Salem's Lot was one of the few King novels where the ending didn't feel out of place (his only weakness...he tends to lose steam in the ending).

After I read the book I'm reading now (Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn) I'll have to pick up another King book. Been a while for me.

I'm a big fan of SK but, I have to agree with you about the end of (some of) King's books. IMO he takes his time building a great story with in-depth characters and settings, then just when you're at the climax it fizzles or you find out the thing you've been afaid of is a giant bug/alien/silly creature. This doesn't happen all the time and it's a small sacrifice to bear for such great stories.

For me it was Misery and The Stand.

Misery for the feel of absolute isolation and impotence.

And The Stand for it's end of the world beginning, it was so much greater because of all the average everyday people he showed being effected as opposed to the sweeping overview we're often given with apocalyptic lit.

King's greatness lies in his ability to make you understand why a character feels horror. His stuff isn't necessarily scary (I'm looking at you Library Policeman) but because he gets you to empathize so fully with his characters you end up scared when they are, because it just makes sense to be.

really difficult to answer. i have most of stephens books in my house right now and its damn near impossible to make a top 5 but here goes

1. Pet Sematary: Its a great story and one that is very human as well i love it.

2. Carrie: Its very different from the book and while it is short it is very enjoyable

3. Geralds Game: One of the weirder ones but i like it because it shows in a very different yet effective way that the things we keep locked away inside of us pick away and eat at us whether we realise it or not.

4: Cell: Starts out with a really provocative BANG and is very intersting something i underestimated greatly.

5: Needful Things: I love the idea of how he used the idea of our "wants" getting the better of usand eventually being our downfall a book not to be slept on.

I liked The Shining, Firestarter, and The Mist. I like his stuff mostly because it rarely has those touchy-feely all good things come from bad endings. Most of the time, the endings are realistic.

"The Stand" is his Magnum Opus...I've read it three times...I consider it one of the greatest books ever written...

There are Stephen King books I like and then there are Stephen King books I LOVE.

In that pure love category I would have to go with:

1. The Dark Tower series - For all those countless hours reading of the dark, twisted and ethereal journey of Roland Deschain of Gilead. An amazing ride from start to finish.

2. The Stand - Especially for the beginning chapters. I just loved how the disease spread from person to person in such a graphic telling. It was great. That part really struck me for some reason.

3. Salem's Lot - For such a unique take on vampires. Highly entertaining from start to finish.

There were also a few short stories that i loved from some of his anthologies but I won't bother to try and list those. Although almost every story in his "Everything's Eventual" book was pretty good.
