Most of my "Unseen" entries are about films from decades past, but this one is recent... just a few years ago. So I won’t exactly call this one “unseen” yet... just “overlooked.”

Director Sergio Bergonzelli had a long career of B-movies mostly centered in the erotic and western realms. In the Folds definitely veers well into the erotic zone but somehow gets cock-blocked in a wave of trippy flashbacks and a plot so convoluted I need a flow chart to thoroughly explain it.

This grotesque installment in Japan's "Guinea Pig" series is best viewed with an open mind... and an empty stomach.

Dr. Caligari (a smoldering, chain smoking, vinyl-wearing sexpot) is the granddaughter of the famed Caligari from the 1920 German expressionistic silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. She is continuing his previous work in psychology and the brain, often using ethically questionable and illegal practices with patients including a lot of needles to the brain.

Sometimes when actors give a brilliant and memorable performance it becomes their identity, the only role people can see them in. It becomes difficult for them to perform other roles because they are perpetually trapped in this iconic performance. In that regard, everyone knows Anthony Perkins as the legendary Norman Bates from Psycho.

Hansel and Gretel, the 2007 Korean film, uses the original fairytale as a skeleton on which to hang a new twisted storyline that mutates into a strangely provocative and brilliant story.

This past week, I attended a private screening of the hard-to-find British folk horror, Blood on Satan’s Claw. This film has become the stuff of legend. Though it is a well-known horror film in the United Kingdom, it never had a DVD release stateside and was only privy to a very limited VHS run.

Anthropophagus (which I still cannot pronounce or spell correctly) was intended to be D’Amato’s first true horror film, and it is surprisingly good. OK, it’s not a bastion of skilled filmmaking by any means, but it’s enjoyable and gorehounds will go nuts for it, which is why it is this week’s inclusion in The Unseen.

In my slightly sordid past, I have been dared to do a number of things including drink a pint of scotch in just an hour, dance on stage with a male stripper named Turbo, and also watch Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox back-to-back before I knew anything about them.

Really? Event Horizon is “unseen”? Because of its meager acclaims and relatively widespread release, I had never even considered including Event Horizon as an “unseen” title. Everyone had seen the film, right? My feelings on the title’s inclusion changed several weeks ago when I was asked to be a guest lecturer in a college freshman Film Studies class.
