If love is indeed in any way how Hallmark would have us believe, then you can understand the pessimism that some of us harbour. Teddy bears,rainbows and awkwardly 'charming' romantic comedies starring Hugh Grant intravenously injecting sickly sweet schmaltz into the eyeballs? Fortunately, those of you who reading this right now know too well that cinematic romance can be much more interesting.

So we all pretty much know the basic slasher film tropes that earn a horror character the 'final girl' title, right? For those of you at the back who fell asleep during your last film theory lesson; it's pretty much as it sounds – the last character left after the dust, blood and all kinds of unspeakable carnage has finally settled. She's the one that demonstrates exceptional perseverance in the face of abject terror and most importantly, the one who subdues the maniac once and for all -or until the next sequel at least.

Regardless of the abundance of male directors in horror, this genre pretty much belongs to the fairer sex. Think about it – how many time have we watched a film where the majority of men are drooling, sex obsessed morons who spend the best part of the story inebriated or getting violently disposed of by a maniac who often bears the Y chromosome?
