Cronenberg to 'Fly' Again, Opera Style!

David Cronenberg (Videodrome) will direct an opera for the L.A. opera company in September. Which masterpiece will this former lord of psycho-sexual terror, now master of extreme unease unleash upon the world? Why, The Fly of course! That?s right, Cronenberg will direct an operatic version of the Jeff Goldblum-starring film he directed in 1986. The high art of opera mixed with the brutal science of Cronenberg?sounds exactly like the kind of culture clash we?re into around here. I also have to say I'm pretty impressed with this sudden interest in horror operas. Between this and Darren Lynn Bousman's 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' we may be looking at a renaissance in the genre!
