Just this morning, the Misery-able Kathy Bates helped announce the nominees for the 2008 Oscars which, fortunately, held a few genre surprises!
Though Sweeney Todd didn?t do quite as well as we?d hoped at the box office, the Fleet Street Barber himself, Johnny Depp, was nominated for Best Actor in Leading Role, opposite Viggo Mortensen for genre legend David Cronenberg?s Eastern Promises. Sweeney Todd was also nominated for Art Direction and for its Costumes. Be sure to check out our red-carpet interview with director Tim Burton on his acclaimed horror musical!
And before Diablo Cody moves forward with Jennifer?s Body, she?ll be soaking up the Juno glory, since the film has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress in Leading Role for star Ellen Page (Hard Candy).
Apparently the Oscar board felt as strongly as fans did about the use of the original transforming noises in 2007?s Transformers live-action film, because Michael Bay?s blockbuster ended up scoring nominations for Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects.
