We just chatted with Carter Smith, the director of The Ruins, the upcoming horror film about young people on an expedition in Mexico--an expedition that goes horribly, inexplicably wrong. Hotties Jenna Malone and Shawn Ashmore star in The Ruins, which will see a release in April. But Carter Smith, is already planning his follow-up films. Here's Smith on his post-Ruins plans, and what we might expect on the DVD release of The Ruins! (Check back soon for our complete conversation with the director.)
Can you talk about what might be next for you?
I?m working on a project called Come Closer at Miramax, which is based on a novel by Sara Gran. It?s a story about a woman who is convinced she?s possessed by a demon. Whether she is or not remains to be answered.
There?s also a project I wrote called Troll which again is based on a novel by Johanna Sinisalo a Finnish author. It?s a very dark adult fairytale.
Is that something best categorized as horror or thriller?
Yeah, it?s sort of a dark cross between E.T. and Lolita. It?s sort of a very dark adult fairytale. I love the genre but I don?t think that one is squarely a horror film.
Is there anything that was left out of The Ruins that might be reinserted in a future DVD?
There?s definitely multiple endings and certain sequences that will be on the DVD for sure. They were either taken out for pacing or just to shape the story but all of the major set pieces and the big stuff remains in. It?s amazing how much ends up on the cutting room floor when you really start to shape the film.
You mentioned multiple endings. How did you arrive at the ending you finally went with?
Oh, well we?re not there yet. We?re still in the decision-making process!
