Today we get two solid low-budget thrillers that played very well at various film festivals, but aren't exactly multiplex fare, if you know what I mean.
By Scott Weinberg
One is Chris Sivertson's The Lost, which is based on the Jack Ketchum novel of the same name, and the other is Trigger Man, a '70s-style indie flick about a group of forest-bound friends who are stalked by a sniper. Takes a little warming up to, but director Ti West (The Roost) seems to be getting more confident with each passing project.
Aside from those two, today arrives the second annual 8-pack of After Dark Horrorfest titles. (Although they're each sold separately.) Of the eight, I can recommend Zev Berman's Borderland and a grungy little indie called Mulberry St. -- but the rest of 'em are either A) meh, B) terrible, or C) unseen by me as of yet. The Deaths of Ian Stone and Tooth and Nail are the "meh" ones, but definitely stay far away from Unearthed and Lake Dead. The jury is still out on Crazy Eights (which does have a solid cast) and Nightmare Man (which does have the awesome Tiffany Shepis).
So there you go: Not a great week, but two solid indies and eight AD titles to sift through. That should keep you busy until next week, which is when we get a UK import about killer hallucinogens, a big-budget monster-fest that didn't do so well at the box office, and ... one of the most unsettling movies I've ever seen. Until then!
