William H. Macy has taken on just about every kind of film role?from would-be wife-murderer Jerry Lundegaard in the Coen Brothers? masterpiece Fargo to comedic superhero the Shoveller in Mystery Men. (?I shovel well. I shovel very well.?) But Macy?s now prepared to take on the strangest role of his career, as the President of the United States in Stuart Gordon?s long-in-development House of Re-Animator?the third sequel to his original 1985 cult classic Re-Animator, and the first such sequel to be helmed by Gordon himself. We caught up with Macy?who recently collaborated with Gordon on the David Mamet adaptation Edmond?at this week?s Philadelphia Film Festival. The actor was there with his latest film The Deal, but he kindly chatted with us about his involvement in House of Re-Animator?

What?s the status of Stuart Gordon?s House of Re-Animator?

I hear he?s gonna do it.

You?re said to play the President in the film. Is this for real?

It?s as real as Stuart Gordon is; I think he?s a phantom actually. He says he wants to do it. We?ll see. He?s doing another film now, an H.P. Lovecraft thing. He wants me to play George Bush, who?s dead, but still president. It?s a little like life, isn?t it?

Could this turn out to be a cameo, or will it be a key role?

I haven?t read a script, so I don?t know. But the way Stuart talks about it, my dead President would be a major player.

You haven?t done many horror films.

I?ve never done one.

Except for Gus Van Sant?s remake of Psycho.

I did Psycho, but that?s not really a horror film. I like scary movies. Re-Animator is terrific.

In real life, what?s your greatest fear?

Heights scare me. Heights scare me so much I dream about being in high places. And also, I can?t even watch it on television. When I see a movie with someone on the edge? [Laughs.]
