Darren Lynn Bousman, director of the last three Saw films and the upcoming Repo! The Genetic Opera, began shooting last week an episode of the upcoming NBC series Fear Itself. We recently had an exclusive one-on-one interview with Bousman and were able to squeak out some gory details about his newest project. (To hear what he had to say about Repo!, check out our exclusive interview with Bousman, in which he discusses in detail the horror/sci-fi/fantasy musical!)
Can you comment on your episode of Fear Itself?
Yeah, I?m doing an episode called ?New Year?s Day?. It?s a zombie movie, a zombie episode, but it?s unlike any zombie thing we?ve seen. I was very reluctant when they said, ?We have a zombie episode for you.? I said, ?Call George Romero. That?s not me.? They said, ?Just read the episode and decide?; and I read the episode. I was like ?Wow, that was cool. Okay, I?ll do it.? It?s really hard to get me to say? First off, I never saw myself doing TV, and secondly I never saw myself doing a zombie thing. The script had to be good to sway me over to that, because I think there?s so many other, more talented filmmakers out there that could really do amazing things with a zombie. But when I read it, it just clicked. I said, ?I can do this.? The character was cool, the setting was cool and I want to do something different. I?m trying to expand myself. I don?t want to just be that guy that does Saw. I want to expand myself. That?s why I did Repo!, and that?s why I?m doing the Fear Itself episode.
Can you comment about who will be in this episode?
I can?t give any names out yet because I?ve only cast one person, so I can?t do that. But I can drop one hint?there is a Bousman repertoire player in this. I do have some people I continue to use, and he?s popping up in a cameo; but I can?t say who yet.
