LucasFilms panels always promise a few things: inescapable ambiguity, old trailers for new films, new trailers of old films?but sometimes, just sometimes, they throw in a surprise. This year, that same ol? formula did not fail, and what we ended up seeing was an old trailer for the new Indiana Jones film (The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), a new trailer for the old Indy films (available in a new Special Edition box set?but sadly not on Blu-ray), very little on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie/series, and a few sneak peeks at some LucasFilms video games?the ?surprise? they offered up this year, which turned out to be an early look at Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and the Indiana Jones Original Adventures, Lego style!
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
The newest Star Wars game, The Force Unleashed, which I initially thought looked pretty boring, visually bland, unoriginal in its combat styles, quite similar to most other Star Wars games and all around, well, yawn-ish, actually ended up being one of the video games at New York Comic Con that I heard fans most buzzing about. So maybe it?s just not my thing, but I still have to throw it in here. Plus, according to Seth Green, who weighed in on the game when he took over the LucasFilms panel to promote the Robot Chicken Star Wars on DVD, ?It?s better than it looks!?
Hitting stores on September 16th, the game is set between Episodes III and Episodes IV and focuses on Darth Vader?s secret apprentice whom you can actually play as. The game will release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, second generation N-Gage and of course Wii.
Though all systems feature their own exclusive specialty?like the PlayStation Portable, which allows players to reenact battles for up to four players; or the N-Gage which allows players to use a CellWeaver gesture system to use Force power to attack enemies?the Wii probably packs the most interactive experience. For only on the Wii can players use the Wii-mote to simulate lightsaber-wielding abilities, use the Nunchuck attachment for Force power, and access a two-duel mode not included on any of the other sophisticated systems. Indiana Jones Original Adventures
After the success of the Star Wars Lego game, LucasFilms decided they had another plastic and brilliant idea that would (ahem) ?click? with fans. Expected to hit stores June 3rd, Indiana Jones Original Adventures will feature 60 playable characters including Short Round, Rene Belloq, Willie Scott, Marcus Brody, Marion Ravenwood, Henry Jones Senior and Mola Ram. And though the game will also allow for guns, swords, bottles, chairs, and most other inanimate objects to be used as weapons, the most interesting and exciting thing to the Indiana Jones Original Adventures preview was the iconic bolder scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which Lego Indy must escape the quite comical Lego bolder before being smashed to little Lego pieces.
Of course Indy wouldn?t be Indy without his handy whip. And in Original Adventures that Lego whip serves as an interactive tool, which he uses to attack, activate levers, and disarm enemies. The game is rated E10+ (Everyone over 10 years old) for cartoon violence, and will be available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and PC/Games for Windows. For more Indiana Jones, LucasFilms also just happened to conveniently mention the re-release of all three original Indiana Jones films on DVD in Special Edition format and in a trilogy box set?five copies of which we?re giving away in our Indy Trivia Challenge starting May 6th!!
