We begin another month with a strange, solid indie, a couple of old schlock titles you probably remember from old UHF screenings, and a re-issue of a surprisingly solid Sasquatch flick. It's not a great week overall, but there's a few rentals out there.

By Scott Weinberg

Teeth -- Yes, the movie you've been hearing about since it premiered at Sundance -- in January of 2007. It's that flick about the chick who has a set of very hungry chompers in one VERY inconvenient area. It's a satire and a bloody horror flick at the same time, but obviously something like this is not for all tastes. Love it or hate it, there's no denying that lead gal Jess Weixler is pretty fantastic. Extras include a director's audio commentary, a few deleted scenes, and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

The Car -- Before Christine ... there was The Car! James Brolin stars in this goofy 1977 thriller about a possessed automobile. All I remember about this one is the TV promos, so it might be good for a random rental. The old DVD was Anchor Bay, but this one comes from Universal -- which means no extras.

The Forest -- It arrived in 1982, which makes this slasher knock-off one of the first of its kind. I've been curious to see this one for quite some time, although some of my seasoned slasher geniuses assure me it's junk.

Devil Times Five -- A not-half-bad "killer kid" flick from 1974.
Definitely worth a rental if you like the obscure stuff. This edition seems to be the same as the now out-of-print DVD, so collectors should take note.

Abominable -- Rear Window meets Prophecy, only the flick is actually pretty fun. It's a standard but well-presented monster-fest, and the cast is quite colorful: Matt McCoy, Tiffany Shepis, Lance Henriksen, Paul Gleason, Dee Wallace, and Jeffrey Combs! Far as I can tell, this re-issue comes with a slick new cover and nothing else in the extras department.

Grizzly Rage -- Not to be confused with Grizzly Park (which doesn't come out till the end of the month), this one's about four young idiots who accidentally kill a bear cub -- and really live to regret it. From the writer of Cop and a Half and the director of Beach Babes from Beyond. You've been warned.

Next week: Two rather amusing British imports, another hardcore violent one from France, and a really boring piece of "survival horror" from right here in the States.
