Wanna know why America is the best? It?s not the air of freedom that we breathe in each and every day or the stimulus checks our country issues to us so we can all own PS3s. Nope. America is the best because that jolly green goliath, the Hulk, beat the tar out of The Happening at the box-office this weekend, coming in first place at the box office and grossing 55.4 mill to The Happening's third-place gross of 30.5 million. (What came in at number 2, you ask? Kung Fu Panda, with 33.6 million. Go figure.) Other notable genre performers this weekend included Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which hung on in fifth place with a nice little 13.5 million-dollar score in its fourth weekend since release. And Iron Man continued to fly high in the seventh spot (coincidentally in its seventh week out) at 5 million. Meanwhile, the horror flick The Strangers rounded out the top ten with the eighth spot at 4 million dollars.
Meanwhile, overseas, the box office told a different story, as director M. Night Shyamalan?s latest won theatergoers over, scoring 32.1 million dollars against The Incredible Hulk?s lackluster 31 million. According to Variety, The Happening overcame tremendous odds, pitted as it was against the ever-popular World Cup Soccer Tournament, which was thought to distract audiences overseas.
