Tony Stark is revving up the electromagnetic pulse generator once more?and a little bit quicker than expected! With last week?s news that Jon Favreau is locked down to direct the second installment of the Iron Man franchise, the project has taken another major step forward by bringing in a writer. The Hollywood Reporter has received word that Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, scribes of the first Iron Man, will not return to pen the sequel, and that Justin Theroux will take their places. Theroux is best known for his role as an actor in such films as Mulholland Drive, American Psycho, and Charlie?s Angels: Full Throttle (Don?t judge ? some of us gotta eat), but that shouldn?t suggest that the thesp isn?t up to the task. Theroux also penned the screenplay for the upcoming comedy Tropic Thunder (which he also produced, and which stars Iron Man Robert Downey Jr.) and helmed last year?s dramedy Dedication. While negotiations between Theroux and Paramount are not yet finalized, the deal is definitely on the brink of wrapping up quite soon. Iron Man 2 will shoot next year, with a theatrical release date of April 30th, 2010.
