If I may, I?d like to quote The Hollywood Reporter, from whom we?ve derived this next article: ?With Heath Ledger's villainous Joker drawing attention and boxoffice dollars, Sony is moving forward with Venom, a potential Spider-Man spinoff based on a bad guy.? Yeah, you know what? It?s not painful enough that Heath Ledger tragically died after giving one of the most memorable screen performances of all time ? but now let?s compare his talent to the acting skills of Topher Grace!! Probably scared straight that Tobey Maguire isn?t going to continue his role as that ol? webhead--and in the wake of having every box office record they set a year ago dethroned--Sony is turning their beloved Spiderman franchise into the hands of the most miscast villain in film history: Venom. The project is still in the early stages of development, but after reeling in 150 million dollars plus last May, this thing looks like it?ll happen. The one good thing about the pic, however, is that the screenplay for it will be penned by Jacob Aaron Estes, who wrote and directed the psychological drama Mean Creek (which I highly recommend ? it?s like Hard Candy?s gentle brother). Another positive sign is that Sony is having doubts about whether Topher can carry a tentpole picture and are considering recasting, which is fortunate, because I may become extremely ill if I have to watch Eric from That 70s Show further destroy my precious childhood memories. So maybe this project does have hope... Although, come to think of it, they recast Catwoman in her spin-off, and look how that turned out? quite well, right?
