The Empire Strikes Back at the 'Watchmen'!

So a couple of days ago we reported that the dastardly folks that run Twentieth Century Fox were trying to shut down, by way of litigation, the upcoming Watchmen screen adaptation before it has a chance to hit theaters. Well, it goes without saying that Watchmen fans were extremely pissed. Watchmen has been in the broiler for a long time now and fans have been quite patient, all chalked up for that March launch date, only to find the Evil Empire of Fox now trying to steal glory away from them. So what did the fans decide they?d do? Why they used every jaded fan?s immediate line of defense: the boycott...

Yes, fans announced by way of the common man?s press conference (i.e. the blog) that they would be promptly boycotting every major Fox release (a more specific target taking the form of May?s Wolverine film) until the studio conceded. Well now Entertainment Weekly has fielded a response from the offender. Fox has struck back in a public statement, attempting to clear themselves of the allegations made by the angry fans. While fans crucified Fox for waiting until the film?s release was imminent to file their lawsuit, Fox claims that they attempted to file their grievance in the courts several times before the film underwent production but to no avail. Gee, I wonder why Warner wasn?t waiting in the courtroom for Fox, ready to stir up some controversy for their (arguably) biggest ?09 release? Not only did Fox drop that bomb, but they also had this to say: ?Of course we are concerned about the fans; however, any disappointment from the core fans should not be directed toward Fox. What we are doing is seeking to enforce our distribution rights to Watchmen. Legal copyright ownership should not just be swept under the rug and ignored." How sweet! They?re concerned about the fans! It?s not about money at all! That?s probably why they failed to address the merits of their previous comments which overtly stated the intent for their lawsuit was to ensure that Watchmen would never see the light of day. Now I get it! Seriously, when Fox is done letting their manhood crawl back inside of their hollow bodies maybe they can stop bullshitting the fans and give a real response. Fans don?t care that Fox tried to file the lawsuit several times prior to this week, they?re enraged that Fox is gunning for the film?s throat! If Fox wants to win back the fans and gross more than ten dollars (assuming that Hugh Jackman buys a ticket) on their Wolverine film, then they should consider finding a way to resolve the problem so that fans will also get to see Watchmen. Apparently, that just makes too much G.D. sense though. I guess all there is to now do is wait for the trial to begin and see who comes out on top. Let?s pray it?s Warner.
