Do they hand out medals during Death Race ? and, if so, are you still alive if you get the bronze? These seasonal questions were the kind that riddled Death Race?s poor number 3 opening this weekend, a let down of Speed Racer-like proportions. Not only did both Speed and Race fail to bring in the spectators their respective circuits had planned to (Race was thought be a number one contender this weekend) but they also both crossed the finish lines behind chick flicks. If you?ll take yourself all the way back to May for a moment, you?ll remember that Speed Racer faked its weekend numbers to fabricate its placement ahead of Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz starrer What Happens in Vegas. The top spot this weekend went again to Tropic Thunder, 2nd to Race?s chick flick nemesis the House Bunny, and third to Death Race. Dark Knight did its best to keep breaking the bank reeling in another 10 million in the number four spot while Star Wars: The Clone Wars saw a decline of over 60% as it rounded out the top five. Other genre titles hanging in the bottom half of the top 10 earners were Mirrors with 4.8 mill in seventh and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor just barely clearing 4 million and the top 10.
