'The Strangers' Get Acquainted with a Sequel!

Looks like more people are gonna get to know those pesky Strangers. Yep, the titular characters of Bryan Bertino?s summer creepfest will be going for home invasion round two ? giving this story our Irony in the News award for the week. Ironic in that The Strangers? May release was a year past due, and at times seemed as if it would never happen. But the film finally theatres (making 54 million on a 9 mill budget DURING THE SUMMER ? booyah!) and scared the fans, so Rogue is already at the door trying for the sweet, sweet follow-up cash to be made. The interesting thing, however, comes from the origin story at Variety. I?ll just say it now: BEWARE MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD! According to Variety, along with the actors who played the nomadic killers from the first film, Liv Tyler will be returning to the project. Yeah, remember when she sat up and shrieked bloody murder at those two Jehovah's witnesses at the end of the first film? Apparently that will be taken from its current ?cheap scare? status and be upgraded to ?plot device.? I personally am disheartened by this development, as what made The Strangers great was the fact that there was really no plot, no story of origin for the killers--just a bunch of people in scary masks doing scary ass shit (oh, and Dennis from It?s Always Sunny in Philadelphia showing up ? that ruled too). Bringing Liv Tyler back can only mean there'll be some lame Scream-like plot device where these people, who before seemed to have just wandered from house to house to get their murder on, are now following Liv because she?s ?the one who got away? (and I mean that in the ?survived our wrath? sense instead of the ?nostalgic romantic? sense it often takes the shape of). The only thing I can think up that would make Liv?s return worthwhile would be giving her the coveted Jay-Hernandez-in-Hostel-Part-2 role, wherein we open the film with Liv Tyler in some mental institution and we immediately learn what kind of shit is about to go down? AGAIN! But then again, let?s face it, Liv Tyler is no Jay Hernandez. Either way, we, the horror community, have no choice but to leave it up to the original film?s creator Bryan Bertino, who has been tapped to pen the sequel. No word yet on whether Bertino will direct, but I personally think he did a great job with the first, so why not give him the job?
