It was announced quite some time ago that Breck Eisner (Fear Itself, The Creature of the Black Lagoon) was signed on to direct a remake of George Romero’s 1973 cult classic The Crazies.  Well now Variety has gotten word that Overture Films will be producing and distributing the pic, which they’ve now slated to start production early next year.  "We've been trying to move into horror fare that is clever and smart," Overture CEO Chris McGurk said of the project.  Apparently the only way McGurk could think to create something “clever” and “smart” was to remake something that someone else in fact created thirty-five years ago.  Way to go Hollywood!  Keep ruining all those movies we love!

The Crazies, by the way, revolves around people in a small Kansas town who are beset by a virus that causes insanity and death after a mysterious toxin contaminates the local water supply.  The original was directed by George Romero (who will exec-produce the update) and starred Lane Carroll and Will MacMillan.  No casting has been announced for the remake – yet.  Stay tuned.
