Timed to coincide with Warner's new “Ultimate Edition” DVD/Blu-ray of The Matrix saga, Varese Sarabande records has just rolled out a deluxe edition of composer Don Davis's score to the first film in the series.
The complete score contains 30 cues from the original film, racking up over 78 minutes' worth of surreal, avant-garde and just plain disturbing compositions that challenge the conventions of typical big-budget action movie music. Removed from the context of the film, some of it sounds seriously creepy. The entire score was recently performed live at the first International Film Music Festival to rave reviews... and a few soiled seats, we'd imagine.
If you're still undecided about taking that red pill, flick over to the Varese Sarabande website and check out a few sample tracks. But choose wisely – the CD pressing is limited to 3000 copies.
