With cameras gearing up for a start next year on the second installment of the Iron Man franchise, things are quickly falling into place for the film. Star Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau have already crossed the t’s and dotted the i’s and it's expected Gwenyth Paltrow will most definitely reprise her role as Pepper Potts. So who else can we expect to see from the first film? Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, don’t hold your breath on seeing Terrence Howard. It’s been reported that negotiations between Howard and Marvel Studios to have Howard return as Jim Rhodes, the best friend of Tony Stark and future superhero himself War Machine, have broken down. Instead the studio has opted to recast the role of Rhodes with none other than Don Cheadle.
It’s hard to be excited about seeing Howard go as he did such a phenomenal job in the first film but an actor of Cheadle’s caliber coming on board makes it a little easier. I guess only time will tell who will be the better Rhodes but recasting the role of Rachel Dawes sure worked out for The Dark Knight and it’s not too crazy to think that the Iron Man filmmakers didn’t take that into consideration upon letting go of Howard. Sources close to the studio have said that Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains. Justin Theroux is currently writing the screenplay.
