In a move that shocked some diehard fans, meta-metal legends Tool recently licensed three tracks for use in the forthcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour – on the condition that they contribute their own concept designs for the game.

The songs “Schism,” “Parabola” and “Vicarious” (from the band’s last two albums) will accompany a special game environment designed by the band, featuring visual concepts based on artwork by core band member Adam Jones and frequent album-art contributor Alex Grey. The creepy, kaleidoscopic tunnels, revolving pyramids and all-seeing eyes are highly reflective of Grey’s metaphysical work, while the weird translucent skeletons and humanoid sperm-like beings floating around are reminiscent of Jones’s concepts for many Tool videos.

The downside is you won’t be able to channel Jones’s mystical axe – unlike some of their fellow World Tour celebs, members of Tool will not be lending their likenesses to the game. Not really surprising, given that they almost never appear in their own videos.

Guitar Hero: World Tour hits stores on October 26. For more on Jones & Grey’s amazing and often chilling visual sensibilities, check out our review for Tool’s Vicarious DVD.
