Arguably the first band to don the often-used (and usually abused) title of “industrial” (partly due to their foundation of the label Industrial Records), UK band Throbbing Gristle are marking 30-plus years of the nightmare-inducing sounds and images which earned them tons of scandal and notoriety throughout their career and ultimately positioned them as the founders of a new movement in experimental music.

TG was originally formed in 1976 as a response to overly bland commercial rock. As stated in their website, “We wanted to re-invest rock music with content, motivation and risk.” To achieve this goal, TG founders Genesis P-Orridge, Peter Christopherson (also a member of Coil, and director of Nine Inch Nails’ notorious “snuff” promo for Broken), Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti paired their avant-garde electronic music and tape-loop sound designs with frightening, violent and pornographic imagery to jar their audiences out of complacency and explore the darkest corners of human nature.

After officially parting ways in 1981, band members found success in a wild assortment of media ventures before ultimately reuniting in 2004 for the well-received releases TG Now and Part Two. Now they’ve even fired up the old machinery of Industrial Records as well, and they’re commemorating the occasion by releasing a re-interpretation of their very first album, The Second Annual Report.

Recorded live at La Villette in Paris this summer, the performance is being released in a deluxe set including a framed 12” vinyl version of the concert as well as a CD with additional tracks. The set is slated for release on November 4th, in a limited run of 777 copies. A downloadable version is also available.
