Many Hollywood auteurs find themselves dabbling with the idea of the horror film. Kevin Smith has been talking Red State forever, both P.T. Anderson and the Coen Brothers talked possible horror features after their respective Oscar nominations and wins last year, as did Martin Scorsese. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, David Gordon Green is adding his name to this list of great filmmakers jumping into the genre, but with just one small difference – he’s actually going to make the film he spoke of! Green, director of the acclaimed indie ventures All the Real Girls and Snow Angels as well as this summer’s big budget pot-fueled actioner Pineapple Express, has signed on to direct the horror thriller Freaks of the Heartland. The adapt was scribed by frosh pen-men Peter Sattler and Geoff Davey, based on the Steve Niles-written Dark Horse graphic novel, the rights to which have only recently been purchased by production house Overture films.
Niles' original six-part 2004 series about the horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involves Trevor Owen's attempts to protect his "monster" of a six-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley's other "freaks" from their parents' worst instincts. I do love Mr. Niles and I have enjoyed the work of Mr. Gordon Green, so this is shaping up to be pretty awesome. No word yet on when production will start – but then again, they gotta cast actors first. Hopefully more news is soon to come.
