The upcoming Robert Ripley biopic has already courted helmer Tim Burton and star Jim Carrey as one possible team to get the film going; however, the project for some reason has never left the runway. While Burton’s involvement in the film was quite ambiguous from the start, it seems now that a different director could be on the horizon for Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Variety has scooped that Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Home Alone) is in talks to get the long-gestating project in front of the camera. This seems like an odd choice to me as Columbus’ resume only really consists of a string of corny '90s family flicks. Why on God’s green Earth would you get a director who has no visual style to direct a tale as strange and atmospheric as that of the man who created Ripley’s Believe It or Not? A play definitely should’ve been made for Burton.
Carrey, who was also quite ambiguous on whether he’d go forward with the project, is still listed in the Variety article as the man who will portray Ripley – so we at least have that to look forward to (or to dread). The film is apparently getting a complete overhaul from Columbus (i.e. it will go from incredible to lame right before your eyes), who will sign on a writer once his deal is complete. Paramount is now eyeing the project for a 2011 release and hoping to spawn a franchise out of it – which really makes no sense as the project right now (we’re talking pre-Columbus "overhaul") seems to be a biopic about Robert Ripley. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. And please, guys, don't stop believin'!
