Atlanta's mystic metal superstars Mastodon, who enthralled legions of fans with their dark, heavy sound and supernatural themes (and recorded the main title track for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie) have divulged some stats about their fourth album, tentatively scheduled for release in January.
Crack the Skye is revealed as the name of their follow-up to 2006's hugely successful Blood Mountain. The album was recorded at Atlanta's Southern Tracks studios and mixed by Brendan O'Brien, respected producer behind acts like AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Velvet Revolver and Rage Against the Machine.
The band has just posted the track listing at their website:
1. “Oblivion”
2. “Divinations”
3. “Quintessence”
4. “The Czar”
5. “Ghost of Karelia”
6. “Crack The Skye”
7. “The Last Baron”
Since the album reportedly clocks in at 50 minutes, those seven tracks promise to be fairly epic in scope – especially “The Czar,” a four-part concept piece about the Russian ruler. The band has already previewed some of the new tracks onstage, and will promote the new material heavily when they tour Europe with Metallica next summer. The tour dates are posted now on www.mastodonrocks.com, and the boys promise to post more album details soon.
