That's right, pussycats... the way-groovin' soundtrack to viral video sensation Italian Spiderman is now available for download!
For those of you who spent the entire summer buried in a deep hole, here's the short version: Back in May, an intrepid gang of talented Aussie filmmakers dubbed Alrugo Entertainment unleashed a web series on an unsuspecting world – allegedly the recovered footage from a “lost” '60s Italian action flick featuring a chain-smokin', hard-drinkin', hard-lovin' chunk o' lard (with a detachable mustache) who does battle with snake-fondling villain Captain Maximum by employing his many inexplicable supernatural powers – which include flying, summoning penguin armies by telepathy, and inducing a chicken to hatch a pack of cigarettes. Don't even ask.
Italian Spiderman took the web by storm as the 10 serialized episodes racked up tens of thousands of YouTube hits. Not only freakin' hilarious on its own, it's also a dead-on satire of groovy Italian comic adaptations like Mario Bava's Diabolik, right down the funky day-glo lighting schemes, swingin' wardrobe, and most of all the supremely cool groove-rock musical score.
It's this music composed by Enzo Bontempi (we're betting that's not the guy's real name) that really sells the whole concept, and you'd swear most of it was lifted directly from Ennio Morricone's sweet score for Diabolik, if not for the hilariously inept vocals. For example, the main title theme features a tone-deaf rendition of the words “Italian Spiderman” over and over and over again... and we swear you won't be able to get the song out of your head for a week. Whether or not this is a good thing depends on your sense of humor.
This enormously entertaining little ditty is accompanied by three other tracks on the digital EP, which just became available from iTunes this week. You can also hear excerpts and see the videos at the creators' official MySpace.
Check 'em out, baby, then fetch a macchiato, pronto!
