There are so many questions swirling around the highly anticipated 2001 Maniacs sequel and prequel, Beverly Hellbillys and Hillbillys Have Eyes, ever since the news that IM Global Home Entertainment has acquired worldwide sales rights to the two Maniac installments. How much blood and boobs are to be had? Will horn-dog Maniac lovers have the chance to revisit the Milk Maiden? What’s it about? When can we see it? And most importantly will the sequel/prequel films star Robert Englund as the sardonic, confederate, undead cannibal clan leader with the eye-patch?
To answer your questions, and ours, we took them straight to our good friend and franchise director, Tim “The man with the ‘Maniac’-al plan” Sullivan. He gave FEARnet some exclusive and definite answers, as well as a bonus round. So read more after the jump!
“It's all about blood and guts, boobs and butts and lots of laughs and fun,” says Sullivan of the upcoming Maniac films, tackling head-on those burning blood-n-boob questions. “We really anticipate 2009 as the Year of the Maniacs – a true celebration of the splatstick genre that H.G. Lewis began back in 1964."
On a more serious note (well, as serious as the director of Hood of Horrors can get), Sullivan also gave us a bit more plot meat (mmm, our favorite) on both Beverly Hellbillys and Hillbillies Have Eyes:
“Where Beverly Hellbillys finds our maniacs setting up camp in Barstow, California and putting on the Pleasant Valley Traveling Road Show (where they are visited by the cast and crew of a Simple Life-type reality show), Hillbillys Have Eyes is an original story that goes back in time to a much younger version of the maniacs (played by a younger cast a la the upcoming Star Trek), making their way across the Old West in a wagon train that breaks down in the middle of nowhere – and comes under attack from the rabid, cannibalistic survivors of the Donner party! Plans are to shoot the sequel, Beverly Hellbillys back to back with the prequel, Hillbillys Have Eyes the beginning of next year.”
Any fan of 2001 Maniacs is probably asking right about now, but what about Robbie “Freddy Krueger” E? According to the official press release, Robert Englund WILL reprise his role as Mayor George W. Buckman in 2001 Maniacs: Beverly Hellbillys.
And when can we see it?Unfortunately, Tim doesn’t quite have an answer for that one, since even he is anxiously awaiting an answer from Lionsgate Films on whether or not the horror house that brought you the first Maniacs will release the sequel and prequel. However, he did tell us that if they are in fact released by Lionsgate, you can snag them in a nifty little box set – 2001 Maniacs Redux.“The idea is to shoot these back to back in preparation for a box set that will include all three [2001 Maniacs, Beverly Hellbillys and Hillbillys Have Eyes] along with a special collector’s edition of the 2001 Maniacs graphic novel, an origin story, from Avatar,” says Sullivan of the hopeful trilogy DVD release. "The Godfather... Lord of the Rings.... Spider-Man... Every great story deserves a trilogy, and in that spirit, I am thrilled to say, that yes, there will be a 2001 Maniacs trilogy,” he adds, tongue planted firmly in cheek. “And just as Francis Ford Coppola and Oliver Stone revisited their masterpieces, so too will 2001 Maniacs be given the Redux treatment with a brand new Director's Cut as part of this trilogy.”
