MTV News had the chance to sit down with Shawn Wayans on the set of his latest movie, where he revealed that we all might just be a little closer to experiencing The Munsters on the big-screen. Yes, seems strange that he and brother Marlon, the men behind such films as Don’t Be a Menace and White Chicks, would take on the ‘60s classic – but they did make the first two Scary Movie films (also known as “the two good Scary Movie films”), and according to Shawn they were big Munster fans as a kid.
“We were big fans of The Munsters. We grew up watching them. We loved the characters. We thought that they would be a very, very funny movie,” Wayans gushed. “You know, they did The Addams Family, which I thought wasn’t that funny or well-thought out of a show, but they did it because they had a catchy theme song and turned it into a movie. I thought The Munsters had the real meat-and-potatoes rich characters.”
So how close is the film to getting in front of cameras? Apparently very close as Wayans explained to MTV: “It’s almost ready. It’s almost ready to be shot. We had to finish this movie (Dance Flick) and now we’re going through our third polish on The Munsters.” Okay… so when it does go in front of the cameras will we be seeing the Wayans on-screen in make-up and prosthetics? “If we do anything, maybe we’ll do a cameo, but we’re not gonna make The Munsters black all of a sudden,” Wayans laughed. “They’re gonna be green, white people just like they were in the TV show. Their characters are still who they were in the ‘50s. It’s just in modern day.”
So there you have it folks! The Munsters are on their way – which could be a good or bad thing for you, depending on your love/hate for the Wayans in relation to your fondness for the ‘60s horror-comedy.
