If you want to see something die a horrible death then just direct yourself to the news archive for any respectable genre site and check out the headlines from February or March of this year.  Yes, it seemed every friggin’ day there was some smoke being blown up our asses about the Cloverfield sequel.  Then one day something happened… director Matt Reeves finally shut the hell up.  Well shut up until today.  MTV News spoke with the director, who’s currently bastardizing this year’s Swedish tearjerker vamp flick Let The Right One In, about the sequel for which Reeves claims talks have been “frequent-if-sporadic” (whatever the hell that means) over the last nine months.

Here’s what Reeves said in full:  “At times it’s gone dormant and then it’s come back up again.  There are a couple ideas that have potential but we haven’t quite cracked it yet.  When we were in Japan we thought, wouldn’t it be cool to do it here.  I don’t know at this point.  I think if we find something that would be incredibly fun to make and that we would want to watch then that’s what would push it over the top. It’s a weird puzzle.”  Hmmm… I have an idea for the sequel.  Let this franchise die!  Seriously, why does there need to be a sequel?  The first was satisfying enough and it served its purpose and proved the power of viral marketing.  The only thing there is to carry into the next one is the monster – which, in my opinion, blew.  [Editor’s note: Sorry, Eric, but no – it rocked.]  If they had gotten even close to that amazing mutant from The Host then maybe I’d be in for a sequel – but at this point who cares?  [Editor: Er, me and millions of other fans?]  Anything that attached you to the first story was blown to kingdom come at the end of the first!  [Editor: True, I’ll miss the lovely Odette…]  Ugh… What do you people think?  Should there be a sequel?
